Design as Author / Michael Rock

In the beginning, I chose the poem entitled Song of the Open Road by Walt Whitman because I had a design idea that I put into practice, trying to create a symbiosis between design and text. After I finished putting the poem in InDesign and adding graphics, I was deeply unhappy with what I had achieved and resorted to Shift+Del.

That's how I ended up reading Michael Rock's text, Design as Author. Considering that the text is about what it means to be a designer, performer, and artist, I concluded that I must choose it for the project because the text also applies to my study of graphic design.

challenge.

The document is entirely in InDesign; I selected the A5 format for portrait orientation. I made these choices because, ultimately, I wanted to create a booklet in portrait mode. The concept was for some pages to be plasticised, transparent, and cut in half, featuring visual elements and well-organised text.

The initial idea was for the typography to be bold and imposing to create impact, which is why I opted for Acier BAT Solid Text at size 120px for the header and sub-header, and Adobe Garamond Pro Regular at size 12px for the body text.

In the project, I decided that some paragraphs would be less visible, with some positioned behind other texts as part of an experimental approach.

result.

Ultimately, I am pleased that I selected this text, as it allowed me to realise that the term designer encompasses not only the visual arts but the entire artistic spectrum. On this occasion, I had the opportunity to engage in this project to enhance my artistic sensibility. I embraced the critical analysis, grasping what needed to be changed and why.
